A Round of A-Paws for Pets!

They’re known as man’s best friend.  Aside from sweet snuggles and puppy kisses, research has found that long-term pet ownership may keep cognitive skills stay sharp as you age.  In addition to this, researchers at the University of Michigan found that pet ownership is associated with positive mental health.  During this study, researchers found that four themes of pet ownership emerged when speaking to active adults 65+: comfort and safety, social inclusion and participation, purposeful routine and structure: and playing a meaningful role.  In a nutshell, pet ownership gives active adults companionship, but can also decrease loneliness and increases socialization in this community.  “Pet ownership can also reduce feelings of depression and enhance feelings of well-being, resulting in overall improved quality of life,” says Vicki Stevens, Director for Program Management and Communications with the Humane Society of the United States.

Pet ownership isn’t beneficial for mental health alone, but it’s a fun and rewarding way to fit daily exercise into your schedule and get outside which is directly linked to increased heart health and decreased blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels.  The Floridian Club of Sarasota has approximately two miles of gated walking paths for Members and their furry friends!  Also on property is a gated “Bark Park” with two sections, one for small and one for large dogs.  Members can relax on one of the park benches as their dogs romp around and get their exercise!

There can be challenges to consider in taking on a pet – for example, it’s not always easy to find a leasing community that will accept your furry friend(s).  At the Floridian Club of Sarasota, we not only permit pets, we welcome them!  Bungalow living allows for one cat or dog up to 20 lbs, where Villa living allows for two cats or dogs per household.  Planning on going away, we even have Member Residents who pet-sit!

Last but arguable not least, is the social aspect of pet ownership!  With nearly 60% of Floridian Club Members having a pet, there are countless social opportunities!  You can link up with your neighbors for a dog walk or playdate in the Bark Park!  At The Floridian Club of Sarasota, there are Club organized events to include both pets and their owners!  One of our most popular events is the annual Pup Pool Pawty, complete with several pools, complimentary toys, Pup Cups, and more!  Other pet-centric events include a Howl-O-Ween celebration, Picture Day with a local photographer, Paint Your Pet, organized walks, and more!
